“Some Call Refuge” at Vaudeville Park, Brooklyn

04.15.2012, 8:30pm

Some Call Refuge” brings contemporary song cycles by three young American composers (Ryan Homsey, Michael Ippolito, and Eric Lemmon) together with art songs by David Lang and Barbara Monk Feldman, weaving poetry by Akhmatova, Blok, Longfellow, Poe, and others into an evening of intimate and intense music-theater.

Night. Solitary hotel. The moon. Some ocean throbbing. Tears of gold. A lonely woman, lost in a silver dress. Seeming trust. Last toast. A look in the mirror. A swirl in the air where your head once was. “Some Call Refuge” is a miniature “kitchenette verismo” drama for three anonymous figures, drifting in and out of a shared space, staging the transience and shiftlessness of modern desire and despair, betrayal and boredom. Featuring the superb vocal talents of Kelvin Chan (baritone), Joélle Harvey (soprano), Kate Maroney (mezzo-soprano) and piano accompaniment by Peiharn Chen, Michael Ippolito and Kyle Meng. Staging by R. B. Schlather, dramaturgy by Joseph Cermatori.
